“…for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God – since you have received me with such favor.” Genesis 33: 10
Jacob’s declaration is incredible! As a young man, Jacob saw his brother Esau as an impediment to a future of wealth and ease. Jacob cheated his brother out of the inheritance and, worried that Esau would be a vengeful murderer, Jacob fled.
How is it that, on his return home, Jacob sees in his brother’s face the face of God? Esau’s hospitable welcome and forgiveness echoes the attitude with which God daily embraces us.
In whom have you seen the face of God? Who has seen the face of God in yours?
Prayer: Loving God, you offer us an everlasting welcome and forgiveness for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ. Help us recognize how you come to us in the hospitality and forgiveness of others. Lead us to likewise welcome and forgive others. Amen.
