Deaconess Amy Smessaert was consecrated in June 2022 and joined the LDA staff in November 2020. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland. Prior to her work at the LDA, Amy served as Communications Director for the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Indiana, for 13 years, and in other communications roles in the Sisters’ health ministry for 15 years.
Why I love the LDA
I love the LDA because it is a compassionate community that embraces and encourages those who seek a deeper identity as a servant of Christ. I am excited to connect with people who support the LDA and to tell stories about ways students, deaconesses and deacons share the love of Jesus in our hurting world.
Outside the LDA
Amy serves in a variety of ministries at her parish, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mishawaka, Indiana. She is a Stephen Ministries Leader; develops and leads spiritual enrichment retreats, Bible studies, and programs for the congregation and the Women of St. Peter; and is a member of the lector team. Amy and her husband Don make their home in Mishawaka, Indiana, and enjoy watching movies, exploring the Lake Michigan shoreline, and eating Amy’s homemade bread! They have a grown daughter, Dana, who teaches art at the college level.
Favorite Scripture Verse
As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. – John 15:9-12
