Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:14-15
On the flight home from a family vacation, my snack came with a napkin bearing the airline’s logo and the words: “The world is better with you out in it.” While I’m sure the intention of these words is to encourage people to travel, it was also a reminder to me of how important it is to be present in the world for the sake of the world.
In John 13, we see Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, as well as calling them to serve. They are told to not be afraid to get their hands dirty, and to do the work that needs to be done in the world. With this as our example, we are each also called to use our gifts and talents to serve God in our communities, because the world is better with us “out in it”. Let us not be afraid to get out there!
Prayer: Lord, help me remember that the world is better because I am in it. May the work of my hands glorify you and spread the love you have for this world. Amen.
