As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Matthew 13:1
My son and his wife began their honeymoon in Rome. He and his bride had taken a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica and they were “totally blown away” by its size and beauty.
Imagine the disciples’ awe of the temple in Jerusalem. Were they “totally blown away?” Jesus foretells the temple’s destruction, and his comments give a hint of what is important about a place of worship. It is not the size or beauty of the building that matters most, but the focus on God’s work rather than human achievement; the basis of right teaching in scripture; and the opportunity for service to those in need. These are the building blocks of our houses of worship – elements that will endure.
Prayer: When our works crumble, dear Lord, remind us of the worship that endures. Let your Holy Word be our sure foundation, and teach us to serve others. Amen.
