DeacPost “The Family of God”

For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14

As I was sitting in the hair salon waiting to get a haircut, I noticed two young men on bicycles outside the window. They were wearing white shirts, ties and dark pants. They parked their bikes and proceeded to walk in the salon. I tried not to make eye contact as I thought I knew why they were entering and I did not want to have a conversation.

I was surprised, however, when the stylist next to mine greeted them and sat one down in the chair next to mine. They made small talk as each young man got their hair cut. I learned that they were lonely and missed their families. One had a recent death of a family member but was not permitted to go home for the funeral.

Now, instead of dread, I remembered that despite our differences we are all deserving of kindness and support.

Prayer: Dear Lord, remind us that no matter our beliefs and differences, we are all members of the same family of God. Amen.
