“The Lord himself goes before you…”

The road I had been on for hours suddenly detoured. The problem with detours on unfamiliar routes is that you have no idea where you are, where you are going, or where you will end up.

“…and will be with you…”

The predicted storm hit suddenly. My windshield wipers were useless against the torrential downpour. I crept along, looking for a place to pull over where I would be out of the way of any other vehicles that might be out.

“…he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The wind rocked my car; the rain swirled around me like battering ocean waves. At times I could make out the tree across the road, blowing perpendicular to the ground. I grabbed my Bible nestled in between the seats and started reading.

“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

I read God’s assurances loudly, trying to make myself heard over the pounding rain and howling wind. My fears calmed as the Word spoke peace and trust into my heart and mind. The rain slowed and a few vehicles passed by. I continued on my way past downed trees, leaf-covered stretches of road, water-filled low spots, and a few skewed electric poles, giving thanks to God for bringing me through the storm.

Prayer: Gracious and merciful God, You help us through all the storms we face in life with the assurance that You are always with us. When we don’t know what we’re facing, we can trust that You have gone before us. Amen.
