Is any among you sick? They should call the elders of the church and have them pray over them. … The prayer of faith will save the sick… James 5:14-15
Following the celebration of the 10th anniversary of my consecration, several of the deaconesses in attendance visited my son Jon as he lay hospitalized in a coma. They sang songs and prayed around his bed. I celebrated a second time feeling so blessed to have that community of sister deaconesses with me.
And I celebrated once more when Jon came out of that coma and remembered their visit along with many other things we’d assumed were lost to him in that hospital room. It was a powerful reminder that our diaconal ministry includes continuing to communicate in various ways to the sick and comatose. For indeed, we have the promise that the prayer of faith will save the sick.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for calling our diaconate to a community of service and prayer. Continue to bless each of us and give us encouragement to each to share our gifts of song and prayer. Amen.
