Jesus, Remember Me
“Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’’ Luke 23:42-43
Boarding a city transit bus, I thanked the same driver from whom I’d asked directions the day before. Surprised, he said, “You remembered me?” “Of course, I remembered you!” I replied.
“You remembered me.” Three words reflect a feeling of value. Being called by name says, “You are important to me.” Do you remember Jesus’ response to the criminal hanging on the cross? How wonderful must have been hearing the reply: “Today, you will be with me in Paradise.”
Jesus remembers each of us; we are valuable and special to him. Even as we thank him now, at our last breath we shall fully offer praise and thanksgiving as he calls us by name and remembers us.
Prayer: Loving Lord, we thank and praise you, that through baptism, you called us by name. Help us to recognize those whose names we do not know, remembering that they, too, are your beloved. Amen.
