And he (Jesus) said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Matthew 4:19 (NRSV)
What happens when we can’t see the fish?
My son and I were looking at a pond where there were supposed to be fish. “Where are the fish, daddy?” “They are there,” I said pointing to the pond. But he replied, “I can’t see them! Where are they?”
I suspect many of us have felt this way in our ministry settings this past year.
“Jesus, you have called me to be a fisher of people; where are they?”
“Lord, I know you have called others to reach out for people, too, but where are they?”
“Holy Spirit, you are working in the waters, but where are you?”
It has been an isolating year in which faith has been tested. The waters of the world have been murky with isolation, sadness and uncertainty. Yet, we have the promise, “Follow me….”, and we know the pond is full. The people are there and God is still with us beckoning : “Come and fish”.
Prayer: Dear Lord, guide our lives so we may have the faith to lean into your gracious presence as you usher us into the future. Amen.
