For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:8
“So what’s the big deal with the cross?” he retorted.
I had just explained the place of Ash Wednesday in the Church Year to a group of young people. That led to showing how the pastor makes the sign of the cross on an infant’s forehead at baptism and how, by signing themselves with the cross, people can remind themselves both of their own baptism and its importance in our faith.
“So what’s the big deal with the cross?” he said and I found that this young man’s jarring question was an opportunity that the Holy Spirit was providing to respond to Christ’s Great Commission: “Go…make disciples… teach… and remember that Christ is with you always.” What is the big deal with The Cross? What a great opportunity to tell the good news of God’s love in Christ!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the big deal of your cross. Help us to tell others about your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
