Come let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1
While attending a funeral for a talented and cherished church musician, I saw a beautiful language. This musician had three sons. Two were born deaf. Those boys learned church music lyrics through American Sign Language.
What touched me at the funeral was the beauty of the sign language. The sermon, the choral pieces, and the hymns were signed as well as spoken/sung. As the music sweetly soared, the language transformed us through expressive artistic movement or dancing. The signers dynamically shared the pain of loss and the victory of the resurrection in Christ. We “saw” the language and it “spoke” with great grace and strength.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of many languages and ways of communication. Open us always to the dynamic message of your gospel. Amen.
