A voice cries out:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3
We had been ready for years. Finally, in 2005, we received word that our adoption from Korea was moving forward, and now we awaited the call to travel. But were we really “ready”?
What did we know of this child, Han Bin? We’d seen a video of him and his foster mother playing together. We’d read the description of his family background and health. We’d been ready to travel and welcome a new member to our family. Then the phone call finally came.
Welcoming a 21-month-old was exhilarating and exhausting. Now expectations no longer mattered. We had to change our relationship from “Han Bin on paper” to Monty Han Bin in person.
The Israelites learned about a coming Messiah through the prophets. But were they ready for the Advent, the arrival, of that Messiah, Jesus? Are we? How do we prepare for the Jesus we’ve read about? How do we respond to the one who calls us into a living relationship with God? A relationship intent upon changing our lives forever? Those are also questions for us this Advent.
Prayer: Messiah, prepare us to continue to grow in our relationship with you throughout our lives. Amen.
