DeacPost “Domestique”

Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave.  Matthew 20:26

In the Tour de France, the sport of cycling seems as much a team sport as it is an individual sport.  Successful teams include riders who are good in the mountains, or sprinting or racing against the clock.

Successful teams also include one rider who is willing to take on the role of “domestique,” the servant. The domestique rides ahead to create a “slipstream” that makes riding easier for those who follow. He rides alongside the team leader to provide protection. Most often the domestique is the person who drops to the back of the group to pick up supplies from the support car, then brings those supplies up to the others. The domestique probably rides harder and farther than any other person on the team, and willingly gives up all hope of winning as an individual so that the team can succeed.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, motivate, strengthen, guide, and encourage us to serve, for your own sake, and for the world you love.  Amen.
