“Knit Together”–Deaconess Johnna Venuto

Knit Together

For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.Psalm 139: 13-14

What a beautiful image: “you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

When I was young, I would find my mother on our couch with balls of yarn waiting to be transformed into intricate patterns of warmth and love.

An artist, a dreamer and creator, like so many other women, she would knit with such care booties for a new baby, a blanket for a newlywed couple, warm hats for a cold winter, or a prayer shawl for someone in need.

In the psalmists’ image, God, in the same way, lovingly knitted us into being – with care, a creative eye and unique designs that bring us to life.

Prayer:  Thanks be to you, our Creator, who formed our inward parts in our mother’s wombs, for we are wonderfully made among all God’s works.  Amen.
